Metro Supply Chain | Pioneering Environmental Solutions

Project Description

The Metro Supply Chain (MSC) and Impacti partnership began in November 2022. The company realized they needed to do better for the environment. In Canada, the transportation sector is responsible for around 25% of annual GHG emissions, making it the second-largest contributing sector to the nation’s total emissions. They turned to Impacti for support in collection of activity data, and calculation of a carbon footprint that’s aligned with the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1. Impacti is informed by the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) Framework and best practices across the United Nations global network.

What we did

The Impacti team worked alongside MSC’s Sustainability team and delivered the following service: 

• Worked together to scope the scale of emission generating activities
• Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to gather quality data
• Calculated MSC’s Warehouse and Transportation emissions, applying assumptions and estimations in areas with data gaps
• Produced the Baseline Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report 2022
• Shared recommendations for emission reduction and improve data quality

The Inventory process itself has triggered understanding of the data and actions needed to accelerate Metro Supply Chain’s transition to net zero operations and leadership position in Canada’s transport sector. 

Achievements

With the technical support of the Impacti team, MSC was able to produce its first 2022 Baseline GHG Inventory Report to assist in MSC emission reduction progress. MSC is meeting its environmental commitments by:

• Adopting renewable energy by expanding its EV fleet and converting forklifts to electric
• Reducing energy output by using energy-efficient lighting and high-efficiency appliances
• Reducing waste output by furthering the recycling programs and closely monitoring waste diversion
