Film & TV Production

Carbon Measurement Playbook

Why shift to Green Filmmaking?

REPUTATION

“An hour of TV production in the UK produces an average of 13 tonnes of CO2e - equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of a person living in the EU.

— albert, BAFTA

FUNDING & PARTNERSHIPS

"Carbon calculators have gone from being optional to expected. If you're pitching a project, especially in Europe, producers and platforms will ask for your sustainability plan."

— European Audiovisual Observatory, 2023 report on Green Filmmaking

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

"For the first time, major European film festivals and broadcasters are factoring sustainability into selection and co-production decisions."

— Cannes 2023 Sustainability Pledge / ARTE Europe

What to measure

  • Electricity and fuel used to power your offices and teleworking spaces.

  • Electricity and fuel used to power and heat your studio and locations (e.g. generators)

  • Report on the travel taken by production crew and actors - planes, trains and automobiles. Cover the hotel stays too. Encourage eco-friendly options.

  • Report on the food consumed and food waste generated during production. Spend or volume/weight.

  • Report on the spend on materials and props to set up your production. Look for opportunities to reuse and repurpose materials.

  • Report on the materials used to construct new and temporary sets. Work to reduce material use, and reuse/repurpose when possible. Leasing is a great option.

  • What goes to waste during and at the end of production. Find ways to lease instead of buy, require supplier take back programs and ensure proper waste disposal especially of hazardous substances.

  • Emissions from digital media is growing. Make sure to account for the use of servers and editing suites. Look for providers who offer green solutions.

  • Measure emissions from film festival attendance and distribution activities.
